She jokes she’s “the littlest player on the big kid playground.” Her portfolio includes Heintz Vineyard Chardonnay, five single-vineyard Pinot Noirs, Rockpile Zinfandel, anda limited rosé. Her wines are aromatic, structured, balanced, and built to age. (Except the rose. That’s built to drink right now). Bruliam Wines produces approximately 1,400 cases annually. Wines are allocated; production is limited. Bruliam is named for her three children, Bruno, Lily, and Amelia. Her Periodic Table inspired logo is a cheeky wink to her scientific background. Kerith approaches winemaking with clarity and restraint, guided by precision, terroir, and balance. Nothing excessive. Always delicious. Her wines are known for their elegance, aromatic lift, structural integrity, and consistency across vintages. They are equally at home in a collector’s cellar, serious restaurant programs, or uncorked alongside take-out pizza. We believe the Soberanes Vineyard pinot noir is exceptionally delicious paired with grilled lamb chops or a tri tip steak. Founded in 1994, Capiaux Cellars is dedicated to producing single vineyard bottlings of Pinot Noir. Bibiana’s journey into wine began at fourteen, leading her from Colombia to the University of Bordeaux, where she studied viticulture and oenology. She built her career in California before dedicating herself fully to her own labels. Cattleya Wines focuses on exceptional vineyard sites across the Sonoma Coast, West Sonoma Coast, and the Santa Lucia Highlands. - [Clarice Wine Company](https://www.santaluciahighlands.com/artisans/clarice-wine-company): Clarice Wine Company is Adam Lee’s flagship winery and legacy project, named in honor of his grandmother, Clarice. After more than 30 years of winemaking and vineyard experience, Adam created Clarice as the place where he could, as he likes to say, “Frank Sinatra it” — do it his way. Working with two of California’s most celebrated Pinot Noir sites, Garys’ Vineyard and Rosella’s Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands, Clarice produces wines of character, distinction, and longevity. Crafted with significant whole cluster fermentation and little to no additions, these Pinot Noirs represent Adam’s most personal and uncompromising efforts. Clarice is also a different kind of winery — part limited-enrollment wine club, part online wine community, and part wine education platform. The wines have drawn consistent critical acclaim, with Vinous calling the 2024 Clarice wines “the most complete and balanced the SLH had to offer,” while The Wine Palate praised Clarice as “a mature, reflective expression of California Pinot Noir, shaped by experience, restraint, and a refusal to chase borrowed ideals.” At its heart, Clarice remains a deeply personal expression of place, experience, and Adam Lee’s enduring belief that great Pinot Noir should be honest, distinctive, and built to stand the test of time. - [Claudio Family Cellars](https://www.santaluciahighlands.com/artisans/claudio-family-cellars): Beginning with home winemaking experiences starting in 1998, the journey into professional winemaking began in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, as a harvest cellar worker at Gravity Wine House in 2021, followed by an internship with Sojourn Cellars in 2022. During the 2021 and 2022 harvests Chris also processed the 2021 and 2022 wines for the Claudio Family Cellars label. During this time hands on experience and mentoring was augmented with chemistry and winemaking courses taken through the University of California, Davis, extension program in Viticulture and Enology. With an increase in varieties and quantities to process, for the 2023 and 2024 harvests Chris will apply all of his efforts to winemaking operations for the Claudio Family cellars label. The winemaking operation has also moved, with home now being Auburn James Winery, located in St. Helena, Napa Valley. By establishing strong relationships with vineyard managers that produce excellent fruit, my winemaking practice is able to concentrate on expressing the unique varietal character and delicate nuances. Nestled high above the abundant Salinas Valley patchwork floor midway between Gonzales and Soledad, lies the highest elevation vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands! John and Lynn Petersen developed the Cortada Alta Vineyard between 2014 and 2017 with great vision. They created this STATE OF THE ART little piece of HEAVEN that boasts some of the highest quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Viognier vines around. John and Lynn named the vineyard Cortada Alta, which translates from Spanish to High Notch — and High Notch this property is. The Bianchi family honorably reclaimed this land in 2022. Their Spanish Soberanes ancestors have been stewards of much of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range and Salinas Valley fertile soils along the Salinas River, including present day King CIty and San Ardo, as well as other Monterey County areas, since 1769 when José María Soberanes arrived as part of the Portola Expedition. The Bianchi Family’s Great-Great Grandfather Feliciano Soberanes’ (José’s son) bust still sits on display in the Soledad Mission today. Third and fourth generation farmers, father and son; Matt and Zach Panziera, grandson and great-grandson of Bob Oliver Bianchi, are now managing and farming the vineyard. John Boekenoogen planted the ranch to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in 1997. The results have been one of those wonders of nature as the vines produce truly exception wines. A few years later he added a state of the art winery in the middle of the vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands and started making Boekenoogen wines. John and Lynn named the vineyard Cortada Alta, which translates from Spanish to High Notch — and High Notch this property is. The Bianchi family honorably reclaimed this land in 2022. Their Spanish Soberanes ancestors have been stewards of much of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range and Salinas Valley fertile soils along the Salinas River, including present day King CIty and San Ardo, as well as other Monterey County areas, since 1769 when José María Soberanes arrived as part of the Portola Expedition. In 1996, Dan and Donna Lee invested in their vision, purchasing and planting a 65 acre property in the northern end of the newly named, still not well known Santa Lucia Highlands AVA.Of all of the places they could have selected to establish a new “Premier Cru” estate, this site was to prove most perfect. The first plantings were in 1997. At present, the vineyard consists of 48.52 planted acres: 27.99 acres planted to Pinot Noir, 18.45 acres of Chardonnay, 1.06 acres of Syrah and 1.02 acres of Riesling. A rolling vineyard with views of the valley and nearby mountains, the 112-acre parcel combines three distinct elements of a great vineyard: soils, micro-terroirs, and vineyard spacing. The soil is sandy loam, deposited by mudslides that came off the Santa Lucia Mountains thousands of years ago. Their fine particulate structure allows for the vineyard to be very well-drained. Micro-terroir refers to the subtle differences in weather, even within the relatively small space of a few hundred yards. Finally, vines in the Kitewinder Vineyard are densely planted. This close spacing results in wines that are more concentrated and powerful. They planted their vines, and with it, laid the foundation for what would become one of the area’s most respected vineyards. Alongside Sleepy Hollow and Smith & Hook, La Reina was part of a small group that would put the Highlands on the map. By 2020, the vineyard passed fully into the hands of Grant’s descendants, making it one of the few vineyards in the Highlands still held by its founding family. The next generation took over, focused on sustainability and shaping La Reina for the future. We grow quality avocados, lemons and wine grapes in Ventura and Monterey Counties. We are dedicated to producing premium fruit through good stewardship of the land for future generations. The Leavens family has called Ventura County home since 1900, when Joseph G. Leavens came to California with his family, seeking a better climate for his health. By 1912, Joe and his brother had begun farming together between Santa Paula and Fillmore, growing Valencia oranges. After World War II, Joe’s son Paul and his wife, Anne, and their family moved to a ranch west of Santa Paula. This property, “The Home Ranch,” now serves as our headquarters. With Paul and Anne’s support and encouragement, their children Mary, Dorothy, Paul Jr., and Sarah became partners in Leavens Ranches. Under Paul Jr.’s leadership, the partners expanded production and added acreage in Monterey County. Originally planted in 1973, the 80-acre site (60 acres planted) boasts some of the Highlands’ oldest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines. Proprietor Steve McIntyre is one of the most knowledgeable viticulturists in California. As owner/operator of Monterey Pacific, he farms 12,000 acres in Monterey County. The Pisoni family pioneered high-elevation Pinot Noir in SLH, and the fruit is sought after by elite winemakers nationwide. The Vineyards consist of small blocks arranged on and around the ridges of the mountainous landscape. Farming is precise, and carried out with a long-term vision and sustainability. The Pisoni Family produces essentially one wine per year under this label. The wine is a blend from several low-yielding blocks on the Estate and is hand-crafted to best represent the vineyard and spirit of the Pisoni Family. - [Playa Alta Vineyard](https://www.santaluciahighlands.com/vineyards/playa-alta-vineyard): The Playa Alta vineyard sits atop sandstone-based soils which were gradually lifted from the seafloor via geological processes over millions of years. These ancient, well-drained soils are optimal to produce balanced wines. The vineyard is comprised of 112 acres of Pinot Noir, 137 acres of Chardonnay, 7 acres of White Riesling and surrounded by 60 acres of native oak woodlands. An ecologically sensitive approach to farming has been implemented at Playa Alta since the land was developed in the early 1970's. Current owner, U.S. Viticulture Farmland, LLC, maintains this tradition, continuously endeavoring to harmonize the vineyard with its natural surroundings. Characteristically, the revered wines produced from Playa Alta express a true sense of place. - [Riboli Doctor's Vineyard](https://www.santaluciahighlands.com/vineyards/riboli-doctors): Doctor's Vineyard is located in the middle stretch of the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. Starting at 300 feet of elevation, the vineyard promptly climbs another 400 feet into the highlands, providing the vineyard with warmer temperatures and higher winds. Planted with wide row spacing on East facing benches offers great sun exposure, allowing the fog to burn off early in the day. Grapes are picked along the sloping upper bench where the union of climate, sandy loam soils and Pommard clone produces small crops that translate to complex wines. - [River Road Ranches](https://www.santaluciahighlands.com/vineyards/river-road-ranch): In 2016 Delicato acquired a historic 243 acre vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands from the McFarland Family, who established some of original plantings of Burgundian varieties in the region. Plush lemon trees flank its western edge. The sandy loam soil allows good drainage, encouraging deep vine roots that add complexity in the wines. Here we grow Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah. Our wines from Rosella’s Vineyard are known for their expressive aromatics and smooth suppleness on the palate. - [Saint Lucy Vineyard](https://www.santaluciahighlands.com/vineyards/saint-lucy): The St Lucy Vineyard along River Road in the Santa Lucia Highlands is the result of a 10-year effort to secure land in the Santa Lucia Highlands with the goal to grow premium pinot noir and chardonnay and produce wine from those grapes by late owner John Peterson and the current stewards, the Gourley family. Saint Lucy produces small quantities of artisan crafted wine from meticulously farmed, Estate Grown grapes for select winemakers. The vineyard is 7.8 acres planted to pinot noir clones 828, 667, 05, 115 and 777 and 1.95 acres planted to Chardonnay. The vineyard has a perfect Southeast exposure overlooking the Salinas River Valley and benefits from the unique SLH terroir. The Santa Lucia Highlands offers a cool, ocean influenced climate, with morning fog burning off to midday sun and cooling afternoon winds. The overall climactic combination results in an especially long growing season that allows the grapes to fully develop and attain maximum potential. Pinot Noir thrives in this environment. - [Sierra Mar Vineyard](https://www.santaluciahighlands.com/vineyards/sierra-mar-vineyard): Sierra Mar is the southernmost site that our family owns and manages. It is our highest in elevation at up to 1,100 feet above sea level. In 2007, Gary Franscioni painstakingly planted it, and drilled a well which pumps water three miles up the hillsides to make irrigation possible. The heavily sloped terrain and thin soils encourage deep root systems and drainage. Its elevation often places Sierra Mar around the fogline, adding to its diversity and mystique. The entire AVA is only around 15 miles long and 1 mile wide. Tiny though it may be, the area is home to some of California’s most incredible Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards, in- cluding Pisoni Estate, Garys’ Vineyard, Rosella’s Vineyard, Soberanes, and Sierra Mar, to name a few. Windswept The first grape vines—primarily Chardonnay and Caber- net Sauvignon—were planted in Santa Lucia Highlands in 1973. Although the Cabernet had difficulty ripening, Chardonnay proved to be successful from the start. Since the defining feature of Santa Lucia Highlands’ climate is its cool, marginal nature, Pinot Noir was perfectly suited to the terroir. The maritime influence and accompanying fog, along with the constant wind, create distinctly whispery, nuanced Pinot expressions that have become a signature of this area. Jeff Pisoni is married to Bibiana González Rave, the former winemaker at Wayfarer Vineyard in Fort Ross- Seaview. Together, Jeff and Bibiana produce a stunning pair of Sauvignons from the Russian River Valley called Shared Notes. Bibiana also has her own Cattleya and Alma de Cat- tleya labels, both demonstrating her flair for crafting wines with old-world restraint and grace layered with California purity and persistence. After Château Haut-Brion, why think of being anyplace else? Wine, she felt, was in her core. From the age of 14, she knew she wanted to be a winemaker. She could not not make wine. And interning at a First Growth château in Bordeaux? Not bad for a young woman from South America who, when she showed up at an agricultural school in France, couldn’t even speak French. But Bibiana González Rave is not your typical winemaker. Born and raised in Colombia by parents who never drank wine, she initially studied chemical engineering. France, however, was where the winemaking action was. Along with Château Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion, and La Dominique in Bordeaux, she worked in Côte-Rôtie at Michel & Stéphane Ogier and Domaine Clusel-Roch, and in Burgundy at Domaine du Devevey. Bibiana eventually moved to California (where the new action was). She worked at Au Bon Climat in the Santa Maria Valley, and then eventually became the head winemaker at Lynmar (Russian River Valley) and at Wayfarer on the Sonoma Coast. In between all this, she met her husband Jeff Pisoni (of Pisoni Wines in the Santa Lucia Highlands), himself an accomplished winemaker. I first came to know Bibiana, not in person, but through her pure, rich Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs under her own label Cattleya (cat LAY ah), named for the national flower of Columbia, an orchid. The first of her Pinots I drank was called The Belly of the Whale. Who names a wine for the belly of a whale, I thought? As it turns out, “belly of the whale,” is an allegory created by the late scholar and writer Joseph Campbell. The phrase refers to a hero’s death and rebirth, the point when one is separated from an old self and transformed as a changed person, and ready to continue their journey as someone “new.” It made sense, that name. In some ways, it mirrored her own journey. Besides Cattleya, she also has another wine brand—Shared Notes—which she co-owns with her husband and with whom she now, finally, shares (wine) notes. Winemakers can be notoriously secretive. Both the Cattleya wines (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah) and the Shared Notes wines (Sauvignon Blanc) have incredible purity. When I think about purity and precision in wine, I always think about sound as a metaphor for flavor. If flavor WAS a sound, then pure, precise wines are like the sound of church bells in the mountains. Nothing diffuse. No static. Everything exact.
